Figured wood is what happens when a tree grows in an unexpected direction. Stress, irregular grain, or unusual growth patterns cause the wood fibers to twist and interlace, producing a surface that catches light differently depending on the angle you're standing at.

This coffee table top is highly figured cherry, cut into panels and laid in a 'tiled' pattern. The result is a top where each section reflects light at a slightly different angle, giving the surface depth and movement. The cherry ranges from warm amber to deeper reddish brown depending on the figure in each panel, and will continue to develop color with light exposure over time.

The base is welded steel, finished dark and built as a clean box frame.
